Yours faithfully hear that the rulers of prosperous states care for hearing of their own faults, while the dissipated and debauched rulers care for hearing of eulogies upon them. Suppose the rulers care for hearing of their own faults, then their faults are melting out day after day and bliss befalls. Suppose the rulers care for hearing of eulogies upon them, then the eulogies are decreasing day after day and calamities befall. Thus, the ancient rulers recommended virtuous talent by dint of the courtesy of interviews between rulers and ministers; What’s more, they were willing to take advice to blame them for their own faults. As it is compared to the rulers’ riding on galloping carts, they took the hazardous circumstances for vigilance.(Vol.28 Wu Zhi, Part 2)
