Therefore once a wise ruler commits a fault, then he blames himself ; once he practices philanthropy then he credits the favor to the common people. Committing a fault and blaming himself may keep himself on the alert. Practicing philanthropy and crediting the favor to the common people may make them jolly. Crediting the favor to the common people to make them jolly and confessing his fault to keep them vigilant are the sagacious ruler's principles of governing the common people.(Vol.32 Guan Zi)
